Our Mission
The mission of the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is to provide loving care and sanctuary to animals, encourage adoptions and reunions, and promote respect, responsibility, and compassion for all animals.
About Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter
The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, formed in 1993. Since our inception, we have gained a
reputation in Southeast Michigan for our high-quality care and compassion. During their stay with the Friends, which can
sometimes extend to over a year, animals are given more than shelter; they are given a home. An extended stay is not uncommon
because we believe all animals deserve a chance to find a forever family---no matter how long it takes.
In 2009, for the tenth straight year, we saved 100% of our adoptable animals. We are particularly proud of this achievement since we faced exceptional challenges last year. From June to September 2009 our shelter responded to 4 hoarding situations (dogs and cats), including a now internationally known Chihuahua incident that resulted in the rescue of 105 animals from a single home. We are able to meet such challenges because of dedicated staff, volunteers, foster families, and supporters---like you.
2009 Statistics
Animals taken in: 2,590 (up 23% from 2008)
Animals adopted: 1,323
Lost animals returned to their homes: 155
Number of volunteers: Over 400
Percentage of revenue devoted to animal care: Over 80%
Revenue sources: Although we receive a subsidy from the City of Dearborn that covers a portion of our operating costs (15%), we are primarily dependent upon donations and fundraisers.
