About Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter

The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, formed in 1993. Since our inception, we have gained a reputation in Southeast Michigan for our high-quality care and compassion. During their stay with the Friends, which can sometimes extend to over a year, animals are given more than shelter; they are given a home. An extended stay is not uncommon because we believe all animals deserve a chance to find a forever family---no matter how long it takes.

In 2011, for the eleventh straight year, we saved 100% of our adoptable animals. We are particularly proud of this achievement and work hard to maintain it every year. Our ultimate goal is to be the best "recycling center" around. According to Webster’s, to recycle is to “make ready for reuse.” For the past 19 years, we’ve been doing just that: reclaiming unwanted animals, rejuvenating their health, and repurposing them in a loving family environment.

We are able to reach this goal because of dedicated staff, volunteers, foster families, and supporters---like you.

2011 Statistics

Animals taken in: 2,450
Animals adopted: 1,292
Lost animals returned to their homes: 202
Number of volunteers: Over 250
Percentage of revenue devoted to animal care: Over 80%
Revenue sources: Although we receive a subsidy from the City of Dearborn that covers a portion of our operating costs (9%), we are primarily dependent upon donations and fundraisers.
